What Is Food?

· Blog

What is food, really? And how do we connect with our body's wisdom to eat in a way that we thrive? Join us to explore:

Food nourishes and sustains us. As we as a species evolved, we found our food by instinct and a close connection with the natural world. We had a simple, clean relationship with our food for nourishment, and we thrived.

Many of us now have developed a relationship with food that feeds more than our nutritional needs. We use food for celebration, reward, social connection, mood relief and more. And this type of relationship often results in chronic health conditions, excess weight and eating disorders.

The good news is that nature is designed to return to balance. And that’s our nature too.

What if health conditions, excess weight and even eating disorders are signals our bodies are sending to get our attention to slow down and listen to our inner wisdom? What if these conditions were a cry to return to balance and the path back to balance was built into an inner GPS, our inner intelligence?

The recipe today is an oil free dressing made with Lemon, Mustard and Cashews. Really delicious. And we've included a suggestion to try it on: a quinoa and brown rice salad with chopped broccoli florets and grated carrot and red onion.

Lemon Mustard Cashew Dressing

  • 1 ½ lemons, juiced
  • 2 ½ tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • ¾ cup purified water
  • ½ cup raw cashews
  • 2 large garlic cloves, peeled
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Large pinch of turmeric

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend on high until smooth. Serve over salads or cooked dark greens, cooked whole grains, or raw vegetables.

And here is a simple suggestion to serve the dressing on:

Start with a base of baby greens in a shallow bowl. Then put a cup of cooked quinoa and brown rice (or any cooked grain of your choice) over half the greens. Add ½ cup grated carrots and grated red onion over ¼ of the remaining space. And finally add broccoli florets thinly sliced over the last ¼ of the space. Top with lots of the yummy Lemon Mustard Cashew dressing.
