Waking Up from the Dream

· Blog

We all know what it's like to wake up from a scary dream and feel the relief of knowing it was only in our mind, knowing it wasn't real. But it sure seemed real while we were dreaming, didn't it?

We've been exploring how much our reaching for food when we aren't hungry may be a lot like that. Have you ever noticed how, when you have a craving, you don't really see what's behind it? Kind of like when a child is afraid there's a boogey man under the bed, but you look to see, and there's no one there. It isn't real, but to our mind it sure is.

It's amazing how powerful our thoughts can be. How real something can seem when there's nothing real behind it. That's what creates our feelings in a dream. There's nothing real behind it but thought, but we're believing the thought-made movie as though it were real. And then we wake up.

Join us to hear more:

What if, when we're craving something to eat when we aren't hungry, we're just turning to food to try to alleviate some subtle feeling that's going on inside? What if that craving and reaching for food is trying to make the feeling go away that is only being generated by a thought, and nothing real?

What if you just woke up?

Try this: the next time you find your self craving something and you notice you aren't hungry, just pause for a moment and see what's really going on? Is the food to nourish your body, or is it to manage a "boogey man" in the closet?

Then choose.

We have a wonderful Creamy Cucumber Basil Soup recipe for you this week. We're getting lots of cucumbers from the farm we volunteer at, and this is a fabulous way to use them.

Creamy Cucumber Basil Soup (Serves 2-3)

This is a nice twist on a traditional cucumber soup. By creaming it (with cashews) it's richer and more filling. Still refreshingly wonderful too.

  • 3 English cucumbers
  • 3/4 cup raw cashews
  • 4 tablespoons fresh basil
  • 1-2 tablespoons sumac (optional)
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste

Chop cucumber into chunks. Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Enjoy.
